அவளது கைகளை ஆதரவாகப் பற்றி,
”கவலபடாத, நம்ம பக்கம் கடவுள் இருக்காரு. அவளுக்கு ஒன்னும் ஆகாது. ஆகவும் விடமாட்டன்.” குரலில் தீவிரத்துடன் கூறியவனை நம்பிக்கையுடன் பார்த்தாள் லட்சுமி.
காரிலிருந்து மயங்கிக் கிடந்த பவித்ராவை கையணைப்பில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு இறங்கிய கார்த்திக்கை நோக்கி,
”சீக்கிரம் வா அவள கட்டி போடணும்.” பரபரப்புடன் அந்த பங்களாவை நெருங்கினர். அங்கே பவித்ராவைப் பார்த்து,
”அவள ஏ கிட்ட குடு.” அருகிலிருந்த கதிரையில் அமர்த்தினான் விக்னேஷ்.
கையில் ஏதோ பிசுபிசுக்கவும் கைகளை உயர்த்திப் பார்த்த கார்த்திக் அதிர்ந்தான். இரத்தம் வழிந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. உடனே பவித்ராவை நோட்டமிட்டவனது கண்களில் அவளது கைகளிலுள்ள காயம் பட்டது. அருகிலிருந்த பிடவையொன்றால் அவளது காயங்களை ஒற்றியவனைக் கண்டு,
“கார்த்திக் என்ன பண்ற நீ? கொஞ்சதுல சாகப் போறவக்கு எதுக்குடா இவ்ளோ பில்டப்.”
அவனது வார்த்தைகளில் கோபத்தின் உச்சிக்கே சென்றவன், திடீரென அவனது சேர்ட்டை இழுத்து விட்டு ,
”டேய் விக்கி நீ எல்ல மீறி போறாய் ஜாக்றத.” அவனை உதறிவிட்டு,
”ஓஹோ பந்தபாசம் உண்மதா போல, ஆனா ஒன்னு ஞாபகம் வெச்சுக இவள இனி யாராலயும் காப்பாத்த முடியாதுடா.”
கோபாவேசமாக கத்திக்கொண்டு இடுப்பிலிருந்த கத்தியுடன் அவளை நெருங்கினான். பின்னால் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தவன்,
”விக்கி. வேணாம்டா.” ஒரேதாவில் கத்தியை பறித்துக் கொண்டான். கோபம் கொப்பளிக்கும் கண்களுடன் அவனை நோக்கிப் பாய்ந்தவன்,
”டேய் கத்திய குடு இல்லின்னா.” தனது பலத்தையெல்லாம் சேர்த்து அவனை தாக்கினான்.
”டேய்! நீ திருந்தவே மாட்டியாடா.”
தன் கையிலிருந்த கத்தியை அவன் பக்கமாக வீசினான். கத்தி சரியாக விக்னேஷின் வயிற்றில் குத்தி நின்றது. அவன் தடுமாறினான். மீண்டும் அவனருகே சென்று வயிற்றிலிருந்த கத்தியை எடுத்தான். விக்னேஷிடமிருந்து
”அம்மா.” என்ற சப்தம் வெளிப்பட்டது.
இந்த நேரத்தில் லட்சுமியும், வினோத்தும் ஓடிவந்தனர்.
