நவீன இலங்கையின் மாகாணங்களில் ஒன்றாக இது காணப்படுகிறது. ஆயினும் இப்பிரதேசம் தொன்மைக்காலத்திலிருந்து வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்ற பகுதியாகும். மன்னன் பராக்கிரமபாகு தக்கிணத்தை ஆண்ட காலத்தில் இப்பிரதேசத்தில் சில பகுதிகள் பஞ்ச யோஜன மாவட்டம் என அழைக்கப்பட்டதாக அறியப்படுகிறது.

மன்னன் பராக்கிரமபாகு இங்கு பல அபிவிருத்தி நடவடிக்கைகளையும் மேற்கொண்டு இருந்தான்.

போர்த்துகேயர் வந்த காலத்தில் நிலவிய கோட்டை அரசு 1521 இல் மன்னன் விஜயபாகு கொலையுடன் மூன்று பிரிவுகளாக சிதைவடைந்த போது உருவாகிய சீதாவாக்கை அரசு இப்பிரதேசத்திலேயே பெருமளவு பரந்திருந்தது. மேலும் ரைகம அரசும் இப்பிரதேசத்தின் சில பகுதிகளை உள்வாங்கியிருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. மன்னன் விஜயபாகுவும் இப்பிரதேசத்தில் தனது நடவடிக்கைகளை மேற்கொண்டு இருந்தான். சிவனொலிபாதமலைக்கு செல்லும் யாத்திரிகர்கள் நலன் கருதி இப்பிரதேசத்தில் அமைந்திருந்த “கிலீ மலை” என்ற கிராமத்தை மன்னன் விஜயபாகு தானமாக வழங்கியிருந்ததாக கல்வெட்டுக்கள் கூறுகிறது.

கண்டி இராச்சிய காலப்பகுதியில் கண்டி அரசர்களிது நேரடி பரிபாலனத்தின் கீழ் இப்பகுதி வராவிட்டாலும் கூட கண்டி இராசதானி மன்னர்களால் ஆளப்பட்டது. இப்பிரதேசம் மீதான ஆதிக்கம் கொழும்பு படையெடுப்புகளிலிருந்து கண்டியை காக்க உதவும் என்பதாலும், இங்கு இருந்து பெறப்பட்ட கறுவா, மிளகு, பாக்கு போன்ற வர்த்தக பொருட்கள் கருதியும் கண்டி அரசர்கள் இப்பகுதியில் செல்வாக்கு செலுத்தி இருந்தனர்.

போர்த்திகேயரும், ஒல்லாந்தரும் கூட கண்டியுடனான தொடர்புக்கு அவசியம் என்ற வகையில் சப்ரகமுவ பிரதேசம் மீது செல்வாக்கும், ஆதிக்கமும் செலுத்தினர். இப்பகுதியின் பெரும்பகுதியைக் காலிக் கொமாண்டரியுடன் ஒல்லாந்தர் இணைத்து நிர்வகித்தனர். ஆங்கிலேயர் காலத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட நிர்வாக மாற்றம் காரணமாக இப்பிரதேசம் முக்கியத்துவம் இழந்தது. ஆங்கிலேயர் கண்டியை கைப்பற்றியதன் பின்பு இது அவர்களது மாகாண நிர்வாக முறையின் கீழ் இதன் பகுதிகள் மேற்கு, தெற்கு மாகாணங்களுக்குள் உள்வாங்கப்பட்டது.

பண்டைய காலம் தொட்டே எமது நாட்டின் இரத்தினக் கற்கள் பிரசித்தி பெற்று விளங்குகிறது. இதனாலேயே எமது நாட்டிற்கு ‘இரத்தின தீபம்’ என அந்நியர்களால் பெயரிடப்பட்டது. இரத்தினக்கற்கள் இரத்தினபுரி, பலாங்கொடை, ஒக்கம்பிடிய போன்ற பகுதிகளில் அதிகமாகக் கிடைக்கின்றன. மேலும் சிங்கராஜ வனத்தின் பெரும் பகுதி இம்மாகாணத்தின் கீழ் இருப்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஜிம்க என்று அழைக்கப்படும் ஜின் கங்கையும், கலாதோட்ட என்று அழைக்கப்படும் களு கங்கையும் இப்பிரதேசத்தினுடாக செல்வது இப்பிரதேசத்தை வளம் பெறச் செய்கிறது.

இரத்தினபுரி இம்மாகாணத்தில் முக்கிய நகராக காணப்பட்டமையால் இதை தலைநகராகக் கொண்டு மத்திய மாகாணம், தென் மாகாணம் என்பவற்றின் சில பகுதிகளை வெட்டி 1889 இல் இம்மாகாணத்தை பிரித்தானியர்கள் உருவாகியிருந்தனர்.

சிங்கராஜ வனம் இருந்ததால் ஆதியில் இருந்து இம்மாகாணம் மனித நடவடிக்கைகளிற்கு பெரிதும் வாய்பான சூழலை கொண்டிருக்கவில்லை, எனினும் கண்டி எல்லையில் அமைந்திருந்தமையும், இரத்தினகல் வர்த்தகம் என்பவற்றின் மூலமும் இப்பிரதேசம் புகழடைந்து இருந்தது. இன்றும் அது புகழுக்குரியதாகவே காணப்படுகிறது
